The procurement problem

01kW + rating mismatch across replacements

A 1.5 kW IEC-frame induction driven by a 0.4 kW PowerFlex 4M drive spec, and a 1.5 kW replacement motor spec, both read as 'AC induction 1.5 kW' on a paper list — but the IEC frame size, the flange mount, and the encoder cutout all diverge. Specsmith reads the motor body and pins kW + frame + flange from the photo, so the procurement list collapses to the verified MPN with the same footprint instead of three near-misses that look interchangeable on paper.

02Encoder orientation + feedback mismatch

Servo and stepper MPNs are differentiated by encoder orientation (radial vs axial), ppr count, and feedback cable length. A 24-bit Sigma-5 servo replaced with a 17-bit encoder and a different cable gland strands the line for a shift while the bench sources the matching connector. Specsmith reads the encoder body and pins the feedback spec from the photo, so a re-spec lands the encoder the panel was wired for.

03Gearbox backlash + frame mismatch

Gearmotors and right-angle drives carry a backlash spec (arc-min) and a frame / shaft-mount pattern that varies per vendor. A NEMA 17 / planetary gearbox replaced with a NEMA 23 / right-angle housing strands a label cell for a shift while the team sources a different bracket. Specsmith reads the gearbox output and pins the backlash + frame from the photo, so the next replacement lands with the same mechanical carry-over.
